What are values of life ?
Values in Life
Through generations, some values have crystallized as eternal and universal which give us our clear “do’s and don’t s.”Today’s concept of relative values says, “Everything is ok. what right for me, may not be right for you.” If values are subjective and they keep changing from person to person and situation to situation, then they are not values at all. In science we look for theories and laws. In the commercial world, we look for guiding principles. Why then should we not look for universal benchmarks for values ?
Whatever business or profession we may be in, unless we have clear quality standards and benchmarks, how can we ever achieve them ? Similarly, unless we have universal benchmarks for values and ethics how can we ever meet them ? The question is how do we set those universal benchmarks ?
In order to live our lives by worthwhile values we need to able to differentiate between right and wrong. This is not the kind of understanding that any of us born with. It is something that we learn as we go along. Institutions like family, school, neighborhood help form values. In turn, our values act as binding force for our families and societies. They help a child become a good adult., go on to become a good spouse and good parent. Strong values lead to strong families, which in turn prove to be an asset to society.
Whenever we think and talk of values, we need to ask, “whose values are we talking about?” and “who are we to judge?” We are talking about universal and eternal values, which cut across country, culture, and religion. Since we have to live with universal benchmarks, it flows naturally that we have to judge ? Just as truth doesn’t with season, facts do not disappear just because they are ignored. The same holds true for good values. Unlike success which is fleeting, values endure.
